Memorial Day is a United
States federal holiday celebrated on the last Monday of May.
It commemorates U.S.
soldiers who have died while in the military service. Many people celebrate
Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of
remembrance takes place at 3 pm local time.
Another tradition is
to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff [half-mast] from dawn until
noon local time.
Volunteers often
place American flags on each grave site at National Cemeteries. The National Memorial Day Parade attracts more than
250,000 patriotic Americans to honor those who have sacrificed through service
to their country.
