We use A when the word begins with consonants
A dog
A Cat
A Big apple
and we use AN when the word begins with vowels
An egg
An apricot
An orange
but there is a few exceptions for example if the word starts with a silent "h" then the "AN" is used
An honest mistake
and if the "Y" sounds like "U" or the or the "W" like "O"
then we use "A"
A unicorn
A Union
A used top
